Snow Leopard and "Learn C on the Mac"

Postby ashishoctober » Mon Jan 25, 2010 4:30 pm

Hi Dave,

I just bought your book to get a foot into the programming world. Looks like great start and quite accessible!

Actually I faced a slight hiccup at the very outset, which is what I wanted to ask.

I downloaded Xcode version 3.2.1 and when I tried to install it on my machine, it says it requires OS 10.6. The current OS version of my MacBook is 10.5.8.

So do I have to upgrade my OS to install the XCode?

And will your book remain applicable even if I do upgrade my OS?

Many thanks in advance to your latest club member!

Cheers, AO

Though I am not Dave ;-), I can answer your question.

Xcode 3.2.1 is an update release of the developer tools for Mac OS X. This release provides bug fixes in gdb, Interface Builder, Instruments, llvm-gcc and Clang optimizer, Shark, and Xcode and must be installed on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and higher. Xcode defaults to upgrading an existing Xcode installation but may optionally be installed alongside existing Xcode installations. See accompanying release notes for detailed installation instructions, known issues, security advisories

Thank you Zarpa.

But I did not understand much from the link provided. So I am summarizing my questions again:

1. Do I have to upgrade my platform to 10.6?
2. Does the book remain usable if I upgrade it?

Ashish, if you are still interested, the iPhone SDK for 10.5.8 is available on the portal page for the iPhone Developer program. Here's a direct link:

You may need to sign in first. The book would be usable under either version of Mac OS X.
